    Description

Discover northern Portugal through two distinct wine landscapes linked by one beautifully paced private journey from Porto. This full-day experience begins in Amarante, continues through the inland edge of the Vinho Verde region and unfolds into the dramatic scenery of the Douro Valley, creating a day shaped by heritage, changing landscapes and the pleasure of experiencing different expressions of Portuguese wine in a single itinerary.

The morning opens in Amarante, one of the most elegant historic towns in the north of Portugal. Here, the day begins with a guided walk through its religious and architectural heritage, centred on the Church of São Gonçalo and the riverfront setting that gives the town so much of its character. The church, the convent and the bridge over the Tâmega bring together beauty, history and a strong sense of place, while an optional stop for a local pastry can add another warm and authentic layer to the experience.

From Amarante, the route moves into the transition zone between the greener landscapes of the Vinho Verde region and the first signs of the Douro. This is where the day can naturally open into a first optional wine moment, selected separately during booking. A tasting in this part of the journey may focus on Vinho Verde table wines, offering a fresher and more vibrant introduction to northern Portuguese wine culture before the river landscape of the Douro takes over. Depending on the selected option, the tasting may include 4 wines, creating a clear and approachable beginning to the day’s wine story.

As the journey continues toward the Douro, the landscape changes with it. The scenic approach to Peso da Régua, including the celebrated N222 corridor and the Bagaúste Dam area, works as a true arrival sequence: greener hills gradually give way to a broader river valley, terraced slopes and the scale that defines the Douro. A calm walk along the riverfront in Régua helps ground the experience before lunch, giving travellers time to take in the river’s width, vineyard geometry and the more open rhythm of the valley.

Lunch remains flexible so the day can adapt naturally to the kind of experience you want. This may mean a meal at a traditional local restaurant in Peso da Régua, with a more relaxed and authentic atmosphere close to the river, or a winery-style lunch setting for those who prefer a more immersive and private midday experience. Meals are not included in the base tour.

In the afternoon, the experience can continue with a second optional element, again selected separately during booking. This may be a Port wine tasting, a Douro DOC wine tasting, or a 1-hour Douro river cruise, depending on the rhythm and balance you want for the day. A Port-focused tasting brings richness, depth and age-shaped character, while a Douro DOC tasting reveals another side of the valley through structure, freshness and vineyard expression. The river cruise, by contrast, offers a calmer and more panoramic reading of the Douro from the water.

By the time you return to Porto in the early evening, the impression is of having travelled through two distinct wine worlds in a single day: the freshness and inland character of the Vinho Verde region and the depth, scale and atmosphere of the Douro Valley. Combined with the cultural opening in Amarante, this creates a private experience that feels varied, polished and complete.

Transparency note: Wineries tasting experiences, boat rides and meals are not included. These elements are selected separately in the second step of the booking process, so you can choose exactly what you want to include. This ensures clear pricing, with no hidden costs, no unnecessary mark-ups, and no commissions added by us or our partners.
