The day begins with a private drive from Porto toward Mangualde, allowing the geography of inland Portugal to emerge gradually along the route. As the landscape changes, the experience is framed through the pastoral economy of the region, the mountain influence behind Serra da Estrela cheese and the wider character of the Dão wine region.

The first cultural stop is linked to Serra da Estrela cheese, one of Portugal’s best-known gastronomic products. More than a simple tasting moment, this part of the day introduces the relationship between altitude, climate, shepherding traditions and production methods, helping explain why this cheese occupies such an important place in Portuguese food heritage.

The morning then continues with an introduction to the Dão wine region, followed by an estate experience selected according to availability and guest interest. This part of the day is designed to preserve flexibility while remaining fully coherent with the route. Within this historic wine region, shaped by granite soils, elevation and continental climate, the estate visit adds a natural regional counterpoint to the mountain heritage introduced earlier in the morning.

By midday, the route transitions to Viseu, one of central Portugal’s most important historic cities. Lunch time is intentionally left flexible, allowing the day to remain comfortable and responsive while preserving its overall structure.

The afternoon focuses on the city’s religious and civic heritage through Viseu Cathedral and the Igreja da Misericórdia de Viseu, two monuments that reveal the historical depth of the old centre. The experience is then broadened by Cava do Viriato, whose scale and still-debated history add a more enigmatic layer to the day. For guests with a stronger interest in sacred art and painting, Museu Grão Vasco may be added as an optional visit.
